Board Member: Dr. Seye Akinsete
Dr. ‘Seye Akinsete is a Consultant Pediatric Hemato – Oncologist with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. He also doubles as a Lecturer in the Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos.
Seye has spent almost 10 years managing Hematology and Oncology cases in Nigerian children with the sickle cell diseases as well as children with cancers. Seye’s passion to give care to children with sickle cell has led him to ensure the institutionalization of processes at LUTH to make exchange blood transfusions are as seamless as possible.
In addition, Seye’s focus is to see the increase in survival rates for pediatric cancer patients in Nigeria. According to him, several pediatric cancer cases in Nigeria can be treated assuming the required infrastructure and support are locally available – not all cancers are fatal. It was on this premise that Seye sought and obtained an International Fellowship from the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, United Kingdom in 2016. From this programme, Seye was able to garner skills in carrying out bone marrow transplants for both leukemia and sickle cell patients – a critical treatment to improve the quality of lives of these children.
Seye’s belief that these children can have better standards of care has led him to actively embark on advocacy activities that increase public awareness of cancers in children and the sickle cell disease.
Dr. Akinsete is a fellow of the West African College of Physicians, Faculty of Pediatrics. He is a graduate of the College of Medicine, University of Benin. Seye is married with 3 children and is an avid footballer.
